Rehoming a bird is a big decision. We offer two ways to do it: we find the family while your bird stays with us, or you keep your bird and we actively push the right people to apply.

Full-Service Rehoming

Your bird comes to us, and we do the rest.

Full-service works best when you are ready to hand the decision over. We have had owners change their mind part way through, and the cost of that falls on the family at the other end, who have already been told yes. If you want the final say on who your bird goes to, assisted rehoming is the option that gives you it.

One Fee, However Long It Takes

Full-service rehoming is one payment: two weeks of boarding at your bird’s size. No additional fees, even if it takes longer to find a home.

Two Budgies Who Found Their Home With Us

In November 2021 a spangle budgie called Mint was rehomed to us, because his cage mates had not taken kindly to him. He came with Mochi, the budgie he was bonded to, because their owner wanted them kept together. Both joined our own flock.

Rehoming Questions, Answered

What if it takes a long time to find my bird a home?

With full-service rehoming it costs you nothing more: the one-time fee covers everything, however long it takes, and your bird stays with us the whole time. With assisted rehoming it is one payment of $50, never a monthly charge.

Is listing on your rehoming portal the same as assisted rehoming?

No. Listing your bird on our rehoming portal is free and self-serve: your bird stays home, you look after the listing yourself, and you choose who adopts. Assisted rehoming is the paid option, at $50 one time: your bird still stays home and you still have the final say, but we actively promote your bird and push suitable people to apply: your listing is Featured for 30 days and we tap into our own network, so you get more applicants to choose from.

How long does rehoming a bird usually take?

It depends on the bird and on the families looking at the time, so it could be weeks or longer. We would rather wait for the right home than take the first one offered.

Can I set conditions for the new family?

Yes. Tell us what matters to you, such as experience with birds or no young children, and we match families to it.

How do you screen families?

We review applications, check references and interview the families, to make sure each one is a good fit. We may also ask for photos, videos or a virtual home check of where the bird would live.

Will my bird be safe and happy?

We screen families carefully, check references and give the new family care tips for a smooth move. With full-service rehoming your bird lives in our family home until then, out of the cage every day.

Can I send my bird's things with it?

Yes, please do: its cage, toys, food, or anything else you want the new family to have. We pass along everything you give us.

Can I get updates after my bird is rehomed?

With full-service rehoming you get a report on the new family, and any further updates depend on whether the family wants to share them. With assisted rehoming you chose the family, so you can arrange updates with them directly.

What if the new family does not work out?

We screen families carefully to make that unlikely, and the family can contact us for support. Every adopter also agrees to contact us if they can no longer care for the bird, so we can help rehome it again.

Can I change my mind?

Before the rehoming is finalized, contact us and we will talk through your options. Once your bird has gone to its new family, the rehoming is complete.

Which birds can you rehome?

Domestic, non-endangered pet birds: budgies and other parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, finches, conures and the larger parrots. For large macaws, please contact us first. Some birds need time to settle with us before they are ready for a new home.
