Experience-with-Birds

Experience with Birds

The best avian vets have experience treating birds and other exotic animals, but it’s also helpful if they have experience working with birds specifically. This means that they will be familiar with the kinds of illnesses and injuries that occur in birds, as well as the appropriate treatments for each one.

Qualifications

An avian vet should have a degree from an accredited veterinarian school or college program, along with a license from the state where they practice medicine. They should also be able to show proof of continuing education classes or courses taken during their training. These courses will keep them up-to-date on the latest developments in veterinary medicine so that they can provide top-quality care for your pet birds.

Expertise in Emergency Situations

Even if your bird is generally healthy, there may come a time when it needs emergency care.

There are many reasons why you may want to take your bird to an avian vet or bird hospital. Some examples include:

-If your bird has been injured or hurt somehow

-If your bird appears unwell or sickly.

When you’re looking for an avian veterinarian, it’s important to make sure that the person you choose is qualified to treat your bird. A good place to start is by asking yourself these questions:

  • Do all of the veterinarians at the facility treat birds?
  • How are emergencies handled if the office is closed?
  • Does the facility have a separate area for hospitalized birds?
  • Does the veterinarian care for pet birds regularly?

What Does Board Certified Mean?

Board certification is a voluntary, self-regulatory process that provides proof of an individual’s professional competence. In the case of avian veterinarians, it means that the veterinarian has been trained in advanced specialized techniques and philosophies in the care of birds. Board-certified veterinarians must recertify regularly. While board certification ensures that your veterinarian has had advanced specialized training in avian medicine and surgery, many caring, well-trained qualified veterinarians regularly work with birds but are not board-certified and can provide excellent bird care.
