How do I choose a bird boarder?

The best bird boarding in Toronto: how to judge it, and where to look

Ask every boarder the same eight questions. A good one answers all eight in specifics, and that includes us.

The checklist

Eight questions to ask any boarder

  1. Who is in the house at night?

A bird that falls ill goes downhill in hours, not days. Ask whether somebody sleeps under the same roof as the birds, or whether the building is locked and empty from evening until morning.

  2. What is the room actually like?

Ask about air filtration, heating that does not depend on the rest of the building, humidity in winter, and how the room is cleaned and how often. A boarder who can answer in specifics has thought about it.

  3. Will my bird share a cage?

The answer should be no unless the birds already live together. Ask how far apart the cages are and whether new arrivals are kept separate at first.

  4. What health paperwork do they ask for?

A boarder that asks for nothing is a boarder that takes anything. Ask what they need from your vet and what they do if a bird arrives looking unwell.

  5. How will I hear from them?

Ask what a normal day's update looks like β€” a photo, a video, a line of text β€” and how you reach a person if something worries you mid-trip.

  6. Does the bird come out of the cage?

Ask how much out-of-cage time is included, where it happens, and what the bird has to climb on and chew. A bird with nothing to shred starts on its own feathers.

  7. What is the price, and what does it include?

Ask for the per-day rate by bird size, what counts as an extra, and what happens on a statutory holiday or at peak season. Published prices are a good sign; a quote that changes on the phone is not.

  8. Can I see the room first?

A boarder with nothing to hide shows you where your bird will stay before you book: in person, on video or on a tour. Ask, and look closely at what you are shown.

Questions people ask before choosing

Why are there so few other boarders on this page?

Because we only name a business when its own website says it boards birds, and we quote that website rather than describing the business ourselves. Several places in the GTA are known by name but publish either no website or no page about boarding; they are left off rather than guessed about. If you run a bird boarding service in the GTA with a page that says so, tell us and we will read it.

Is a vet clinic or a home boarder better?

It depends on the bird. A bird on medication, or one you are worried about, may be better where a vet can look at it during the day. A healthy bird that is used to a busy house usually settles faster somewhere with other birds audible and a person at home overnight. Ask both kinds the same eight questions and compare the answers.

How much does bird boarding cost in Toronto?

Ours is priced per bird per day by size: the four sizes are on this page and every price is on our pricing page. We do not publish other businesses' prices β€” they change, and a number copied from someone else's website is wrong the week after.

Can I visit Bird Sitting Toronto before booking?

No β€” it's our family home, so we don't do in-person visits or tours. You can look around the bird room on the 360Β° tour in the free BST Mobile App.
