How Bird Sitting Toronto got here

From Samantha’s first budgie, Matcha, to 3,000+ stays since 2021: first in Toronto, and since 2024 in our family home in Mississauga, where the birds have the whole lower floor. Told one year at a time, in our own films.

2019

Before the business, and before any film: one budgie called Matcha.

Matcha, a green budgie with a yellow face, looking straight at the camera

“She was a feisty two-year-old budgie, born in 2017, but she slowly grew to trust me before she sadly passed away. She was my inspiration to continue my passion to care for birds, and ultimately start Bird Sitting Toronto.”

  1. Matcha Comes Home

Samantha’s first bird, a budgie born in 2017. She was two when she came home.

  2. Maui Joins Matcha

A second budgie, so that Matcha would have a friend.

  3. Goodbye Matcha, Hello Mango

Matcha passed away on 2 December. Mango came home that month, so Maui would never be alone.

“Ignorance is not bliss. I have personally experienced a premature loss due to my lack of knowledge.”

One room, a handful of birds, and a phone to film it with.

  1. Miko Comes Home

A green-cheeked conure, and our wedding gift to ourselves.

  2. Bird Sitting Toronto Begins

We had a short trip to the United States and nobody who knew birds to look after Miko, Mango and Maui. Google found sitters for dogs and cats only, so Samantha started one for birds.

Mango and Maui, two budgies, beside Miko the conure on a rope perch: the three birds Bird Sitting Toronto was started for
  3. Our First Guest

A lovebird, for the whole of October. She shredded paper and watched the city from the window.

The resident flock gets introduced properly, one bird at a time.

  1. Apollo’s First Visit

A conure came in for a nail and wing trim, then came back to stay while his move to the United States was arranged. The move fell through, and he stayed for good.

  2. Cages To Rent

For a bird whose own cage is too big to bring, we keep cages of our own to lend for the stay.

The camera turns around: the films start being about your bird rather than about us.

  1. 900+ Birds, And A Wall Of Polaroids

Over 900 birds in our first two years, and a polaroid of every one of them up on the wall.

  2. Samantha Publishes Parrot Parenting

Her book on caring for parrots, written from the birds she has looked after. In paperback and on Kindle.
