What else can I do with my bird while I am away?
Alternatives to bird boarding: a sitter, a friend, the vet, or take the bird with you
Boarding is one of five answers, and not always the right one. Here are all five, side by side. One of them is us.
Side by side
Five options, judged on the same five things
- At night
- Other birds
- Vet on site
- Cost
- Change for the bird
Why these five decide itHide
- Who watches at night
- Most bird emergencies show at dawn or after dark. The question for every option is whether a person is under the same roof as the bird overnight, or whether the bird is alone from the evening visit until the morning one.
- Other birds present
- A flock animal reads other birds as normal and silence as wrong, so company usually helps a settled bird. It also means exposure, which is why any place with other birds should be asking for health paperwork.
- Vet on site
- Only one of the five has a veterinarian in the building during the day. For a bird on medication or with a known condition that may outweigh everything else.
- How the cost works
- Per visit, per day, a favour owed, an airline fee and paperwork, or a per-bird-per-day rate. We publish ours; we do not publish anyone else's.
- Stress of change
- Every option moves either the bird or its routine. The least change is a bird in its own cage, in its own room, with somebody it knows; the most is a bird in a carrier in a new country.
Option 1
A sitter at your home
Best for A calm bird and a short trip
- Night
- Alone between visits, unless they stay
- Birds
- Only your own
- Vet
- No
- Cost
- Per visit
- Change
- The least: its own room
MoreLess
The bird stays in its own cage and room, which is the least change of any option. The trade is the gaps: a sitter is there for a visit, and the bird is alone between visits and overnight unless the sitter stays. Best for a calm, healthy bird in a house where somebody can also drop in, and for a short trip. Ask a sitter the same questions you would ask a boarder, and ask specifically what they would do at 9pm if the bird looked wrong.

A friend or relative
Best for A short trip, with someone it knows
- Night
- Depends on them
- Birds
- Depends
- Vet
- No
- Cost
- Free: a favour owed
- Change
- Low, if it knows them
MoreLess
Free, familiar, and the option most people try first. It works well when the person already knows the bird and has the time; it goes wrong when a favour becomes a fortnight and the bird's routine slides. Best for a short trip and a bird that already knows the person. Write the routine down, leave the vet's number, and leave money for an emergency visit so nobody has to make that decision on your behalf.

One such clinic, on its own website Option 3
A vet clinic that boards
Best for A bird on medication, or recovering
- Night
- Ask about nights
- Birds
- Other patients, tested first
- Vet
- Yes, in clinic hours
- Cost
- Their own rate
- Change
- A new room
MoreLess
Some avian clinics board birds on the premises, with a vet in the building during clinic hours and health-test requirements before a bird is admitted. Best for a bird on medication, a bird recovering from something, or an owner who wants a vet's eyes on the bird every day. Ask what happens outside clinic hours, because a clinic and a house keep different nights. The Links Road Animal & Bird Clinic in Toronto is one such clinic; its own boarding page is quoted below and every avian vet we know of in Ontario is on our vet directory.
“If your pet needs a temporary home away from home, our Toronto veterinary clinic offers boarding services that cater to the unique needs of birds, rabbits, ferrets, rodents and other exotic pets.”

Take the bird with you
Best for A move, or a bird that travels well
- Night
- You are
- Birds
- Only your own
- Vet
- No
- Cost
- Airline fee and paperwork
- Change
- The most: carrier, new place
MoreLess
The bird stays with you, which for a bonded bird is the thing it wants most. Everything else is harder: airlines have their own rules for birds, a border crossing needs paperwork that takes weeks, hotels vary, and a bird in a carrier for a long day is a stressed bird. Best for a move rather than a holiday, a road trip with a bird that travels well, or a long stay somewhere the bird can settle. Our comparison of boarding and travelling goes through the paperwork and the timeline.

Boarding with us
Best for Trips of more than a few days, and social birds
- Night
- A person home overnight
- Birds
- Yes, birds only
- Vet
- No
- Cost
- From $14.75 a day
- Change
- A new room, and a drive
MoreLess
The bird moves to a room set up for birds, with other birds audible, a person in the house overnight and a daily photo and video update. The trade is the move itself: a new room, new sounds, and a drive at each end. Best for a trip of more than a few days, a bird that is used to company, and an owner who wants to hear from a person every day rather than trust an empty house. Priced per bird per day by size, with every price published.

Questions people ask when deciding
Which option is cheapest?
Usually a friend or relative, because nobody sends a bill. After that it depends on the length of the trip: a sitter charges per visit and a boarder per day, so a weekend and a month can come out in different orders. We publish our own prices; we do not publish anyone else's.
Is it cruel to leave a bird for two weeks?
No, if the bird is looked after. What harms a bird is not your absence but an empty house, a slipping routine, or nobody noticing it is unwell. Every option on this page can be done well; the questions above are how you tell whether it will be.
Should a bird on medication go to a vet clinic instead of a boarder?
Often, yes, and it is worth asking the clinic first. We do administer medication during a stay as an extra, but a bird with a condition that could turn quickly is better where a vet can see it during the day. Talk to your own vet before you decide.
Can I combine options?
Yes, and people do — a relative for the first two days and a boarder for the rest, or a sitter for a short trip and boarding for the long one. The bird cares about consistency within a stay more than about which option it is.
