In a month-long vote that closed in December 2024, 1,265 people chose the dark-eyed junco as Kitchener's city bird, ahead of the merlin, the chimney swift and the killdeer. In May 2025 council made it official, unanimously. Juncos are nicknamed snowbirds: they arrive in late autumn and stay until mid-spring.
