Bird boarding for Vaughan bird owners

Vaughan is almost all highway to our place in Mississauga: a minute on Highway 7, the 400 south and then the 401 west, about 26 minutes without traffic, and from Woodbridge or Maple the drive is much the same.

Borrow The Binoculars, Find The Red Bird

Vaughan is a certified Bird Friendly City, and its Bird Team has been out confirming the best places to look. You don't need binoculars of your own: Vaughan Public Libraries lends a Birding Canada Backpack with binoculars, a field guide, a birding log and a free beginners' course from Birds Canada. Look for the Northern Cardinal first.

  • 16species the Bird Team logged at Maple Nature Reserve, from Wood Thrush to Hooded Merganser
  • 397votes made the cardinal Vaughan's favourite bird: Misko-Bineshiinh, "Red Bird" in Ojibwe
  • 3 of 5of the confirmed birding spots where the cardinal turned up

Cardinals don't migrate, so January works as well as June. When you travel, your own bird stays with our flock in Mississauga, and the cardinals will still be here when you get home.
