What is the room my bird actually stays in?

Bird boarding in Toronto

A room in our family home in Mississauga, set up for birds alone: filtered air, warmth and humidity held all winter, and out of the cage every day. Samantha and Amir look after every guest, with photos and videos in the BST Mobile App every day you are away.

The Room

Where Your Bird Actually Stays

One room of our family home in Mississauga, set up for birds and nothing else: filtered air, warmth and humidity held through the winter, and other birds within earshot. We live here, so somebody is with the birds every day.

  1. Two HEPA Filters, Running Constantly

Birds have the most efficient respiratory system of any land animal and no way to cough dust out of it. Two filters rather than one is what lets the room keep up when it is full.

  2. Humidity Held Up Through The Winter

A Canadian house in February runs dry enough to wreck feather condition and irritate airways. A humidifier runs in the room over the winter months for exactly that reason.

  3. A Separate Heater For This Room Alone

The room does not depend on the rest of the house's thermostat, so a cold snap or a furnace problem elsewhere in the building does not reach the birds.

  4. Cameras On The Room, Watched By Us

They are how the room is checked at night and between visits into it. They are not a client webcam — what you get is a photo and video update every day.

  5. Room To Play, And Things Worth Shredding

Out-of-cage time every day, on a playstand, with bird-safe toys. A bird that has nothing to shred will start on itself or on its own feathers.

  6. Cleaned Daily, Every Day Of The Stay

Cage papers, bowls and water. It is the least glamorous line on this page and it is the one that decides whether a room full of birds stays healthy.

Three clinics that say they see birds are within about 11 km of downtown. Greenwood Park Animal Hospital on Gerrard Street East is the closest, about 5 km, and Dr. Markus Luckwaldt there treats exotics. Boardwalk Animal Hospital in the Beaches doesn't publish its hours, so phone (416) 693-1615 before you go, and the Animal Hospital of High Park on Weston Road is open until 8pm on weekdays.

Toronto, On The Flyway

Toronto sits on Lake Ontario's north shore, where two major flyways meet. Twice a year millions of birds pass over the city: in spring from mid-March to early June, and in fall from mid-August to early November. Hawk counters on High Park's Hawk Hill tally them every autumn, and each May watchers at Colonel Samuel Smith Park scan the water at sunrise for whimbrel.

  • 334bird species recorded at Tommy Thompson Park, the Leslie Street Spit
  • 70,000+birds banded at the park's research station since 2003
  • 2007the year Toronto wrote its first bird-friendly guidelines for glass

Your own bird keeps a calmer calendar: the same perch and the same flock with us, whatever is flying over the lake.
