Avian vets in Ontario

19 practices whose own website says they treat birds, each with the sentence that says so, the address and a number you can tap. Not every vet takes parrots, so every card links to the page we read it on.

If it is the middle of the night

Two places say, on their own website, that they will see a bird outside normal hours. Phone before you drive, and ask two things: are you seeing birds tonight, and is somebody there who does.

  • 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital (VCA Canada)

510 Harry Walker Parkway South, Newmarket, ON L3Y 0B3

    905-953-1933

The only hospital checked in the Toronto area that publishes a named avian and exotic department inside a 24/7 emergency service.

  • Campus Estates Animal Hospital

1460 Gordon Street South, Guelph, ON N1L 1C8

    519-837-1214

This is the clinic that Britannia in Mississauga, Bowmanville and Scott in Brantford all independently name as the place they send a bird emergency, and it has a page of emergency procedures written for pet birds. It is NOT a walk-in emergency room: out of hours you ring the second number and they arrange to see you.

The big emergency hospitals in and around Toronto do not list an avian service: Veterinary Emergency Clinic (Yonge St and Sheppard Ave), Toronto Animal Health Partners Emergency and Specialty Hospital, VCA Canada Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital, VCA Canada Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital. They may still help, but do not assume a 24-hour door is a door for a bird.

Before you book

Four questions to ask on the phone

A licensed vet and the right vet for a parrot are two different things. These sort it out in one call.

  1. Do all of the veterinarians at the practice treat birds, or only one of them?
  2. How are emergencies handled when the office is closed?
  3. Is there a separate area for hospitalised birds?
  4. Does the practice see pet birds regularly, rather than occasionally?

What makes a vet a good one for birds

  1. Experience With Birds

Exotics experience is a good sign; birds specifically is better. Some clinics list the species they see, and birds are not always on it.

  2. Qualifications

A degree from an accredited veterinary programme, a licence to practise here, and continuing education: avian medicine moves fast.

  3. Emergency Care

Ask how emergencies are handled when the office is closed, before you need to. Birds hide illness, so by the time it shows it is rarely early.

  4. Board Certification

Proof of advanced specialist training in birds, renewed over time. A strong signal, but plenty of excellent bird vets work without it.

6 Clinics We Used To List And No Longer Do

On October 1, 2026 we could not find anything on their own websites saying they treat birds. That is not the same as saying they do not, so phone and ask.

  • Ontario Veterinary College — Health Sciences Centre, University of Guelph

28 College Avenue West, Guelph, ON N1G 2W1

The Avian and Exotics Service closed in August 2022. The OVC Health Sciences Centre's own clinical-services page lists seventeen specialty services and none of them is avian or exotic.

    Check for yourself
  • College Manor Veterinary Hospital

    869 Mulock Drive Unit 2, Newmarket, ON L3Y 8S3

No page on the clinic's site states that it treats birds. Its services nav lists 'Pocket Pet Services' with no detail, and the veterinarian bio that third parties cite for an avian interest returns 404.

    Check for yourself
  • West London Pet Hospital

760 Hyde Park Rd, London, ON N6H 5W9

The hospital describes itself as “a full-service animal hospital caring for cats and dogs”, and mentions no bird, avian or exotic service anywhere.

    Check for yourself
  • Bathurst Animal Hospital

352 Wilson Avenue, North York, ON M3H 1S9

The clinic names the exotic species it treats — “ferrets, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, iguanas, rabbits, and snakes” — and birds are not among them, though its microchipping page says it can microchip birds.

    Check for yourself
  • Riverdale Animal Hospital

    901 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4J 1L8

The site now says only “A small animal practice including exotics”, with no mention of birds on any page.

    Check for yourself
  • South Etobicoke Animal Hospital

    741 The Queensway, Etobicoke, ON M8Z 1M8

Its own guide says the focus is cats and dogs, with experience of pocket pets and exotics, and adds: “If you have a rabbit, bird, or other small animal, it is best to call ahead and confirm that the appropriate veterinary support is available for your appointment.”
