Shoulder color varies among subspecies, with pure red shoulders in some and a mix of red and yellow in others. Red marks on the secondary wing feathers are a common characteristic. The wings exhibit dark green to dark gray primaries with a bluish shine on the outer web. During a display with a spread tail, the red band in the tail and the marks on the secondaries form a visually striking red semicircle. Ample color variation exists between individual Amazon parrots. They have a black beak, gray legs, and red-orange irises.
