What grooming do you do, what does it cost, and will you groom my bird?

Bird grooming in Mississauga and Toronto

Nail, wing and beak trimming and DNA sexing, in our home in Mississauga, by Samantha, who has been grooming birds several times a week since 2021. It is a booked appointment on its own, or an add-on to a boarding stay.

Four services · 15–30 minutes each

What we do, and what it costs

Per bird, per visit. The second price is for extra-large birds such as African greys. Pick the one you need and you land on our calendar with it already chosen.

A green-cheeked conure perched on a hand$30 · $40 XL

Nail clipping

The tips taken off with clippers, one foot at a time, on a towel. It takes a couple of minutes and most birds are back on their perch before they have decided to be cross about it.

Two budgies perched together, one showing its long wing and tail feathers$40 · $60 XL

Wing clipping

A trim of the flight feathers, and it grows out with the next moult. Two options: a light trim that keeps some flight, or a full trim that takes as much as is safe so your bird can only glide down. Tell us which one when you book.

A blue parrotlet perched on a soft black blanket$90 · $100 XL

DNA sexing

Nail clip included

A blood sample sent to the lab, with the result back as a PDF report. A nail clip is included, because the sample is taken from the nail.

Two things we will not do

Macaws and cockatoos

XL grooming prices apply to large birds such as African greys. We do not groom macaws or cockatoos. If that is your bird, an avian vet is the right call — start with our list of Ontario avian vets.

Beak trims on small birds

On a budgie or a canary the margin for error is too small, and an overgrown small beak is usually a health problem rather than a grooming one. Nails and wings are fine.

Questions people ask

Will you groom my macaw or my cockatoo?

XL grooming prices apply to large birds such as African greys. We do not groom macaws or cockatoos. It is the size and the strength of the bite rather than the temperament — a bird that can take a finger off needs two experienced handlers, and we are a family looking after birds in our own home.

How often should my bird's nails be done?

There is no schedule — trim them when they start catching. If your bird's nails snag on fabric or on your hand, or the tips have gone needle-sharp, it is time. Some birds need it every couple of months and some go a year.

Do I have to board my bird to get it groomed?

No. Grooming is a booked appointment on its own — pick a time in our calendar, come, have it done and take your bird straight home. It is also an add-on during a boarding stay, which is when most of ours happen: ask for it when you book the stay.

Why will you not trim a small bird's beak?

Because a budgie or a canary beak is small enough that the margin between trimming it and injuring the bird is very thin, and an overgrown beak on a small bird is usually a sign of liver disease or mites rather than a grooming problem. That needs an avian vet, not clippers.

Is wing clipping cruel?

It is a real trade-off and we will not pretend otherwise. A clipped bird cannot gain height, which is what stops a startled bird hitting a window or getting out of an open door — and it also means it cannot exercise the way a flighted bird does. We only clip wings when you ask us to, we trim the minimum that does the job, and it grows out with the next moult.

What if my bird will not sit still?

Most do not, and that is normal. The bird is held in a towel for the couple of minutes it takes, by someone who does this several times a week. If a bird is genuinely too distressed we stop, and you are not charged for the part we did not do.

Do you cut a nail too short?

It happens occasionally with any groomer — the quick is inside the nail and on a dark nail you cannot see it. We keep styptic powder to hand, it stops within a minute, and we tell you if it happened rather than letting you find a spot of blood at home.

  • We had an amazing experience at BST! Our Quaker parakeet was boarded with Samantha, and she took excellent care of her the entire time. She gave us daily updates, which really put our minds at ease and showed how attentive she was. She’s super professional, kind, and clearly knows what she’s doing with birds. We also had our parrot’s beak, nails, and wings trimmed by her, and everything was done perfectly. Would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for trustworthy bird care.

  • Couldn’t recommend Bird Sitting Toronto enough. We came from nearly an hour away because a friend recommended BST, and it was 100% worth it. They took such great care of our conure and kept us updated with adorable videos every single day, which gave us so much peace of mind while we were away. You can really tell how much they care for the animals they look after. They also gave us such a thoughtful gift after our bird’s stay, which genuinely meant a lot to us and was such a kind touch. Amazing experience from start to finish, I would definitely go with them again anytime we need bird sitting. 5 stars all the way!

  • My baby has only been with her for a few days, but I already feel so relieved and grateful that I found her. I was so nervous being away from him, but she made me feel comfortable right away and has been so kind and reassuring. She sends me updates, which honestly means so much, and by the second day he already looked so settled, comfortable, and playful. He usually takes time to adjust, so seeing him like that so quickly says a lot. You can really tell she loves these birds and cares for them so well. Definitely recommend to anyone feeling nervous leaving their bird.

  • Amazing service! My bird was well taken care of during her appointment and looked fantastic after. She had her nails and beak done. Very quick and efficient, so she was not stressed out during the visit. Pricing is also very fair the quality of service delivered.

  • I can’t say enough good things about Bird Sitting Toronto and Samantha. Rehoming my two budgies, Leila and Kiwi, was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, and she handled the entire process with so much care, compassion, and professionalism. From the very beginning, Samantha made me feel heard and understood. She took the time to find a home that truly aligned with what I wanted for my birds, and the level of detail and thoughtfulness she put into the adoption process gave me so much peace of mind. When she shared the report about their new home, I honestly felt emotional reading it. Knowing they are going to a loving, experienced family who genuinely cares about giving older birds a beautiful life means everything to me. If you’re ever in the incredibly difficult position of needing to rehome your birds, I wholeheartedly recommend Bird Sitting Toronto. Samantha goes above and beyond to make sure both the animals and their humans are supported every step of the way. Thank you again for everything I’m so, so grateful. 💛
