Questions About Boarding Alexandrine Parakeets

Can an Alexandrine get out of its cage at your house?

Not on our watch. An Alexandrine is the big cousin of the ringneck, with a beak to match, so every latch is double-checked.

Is my Alexandrine out of its cage while it boards?

Out of the cage between 9am and 7pm — about 4–6 hours a day, depending on how your bird gets on with the others.

What does my Alexandrine need from a vet before it comes to us?

A recent vet visit with a clean bill of health. We used to require negative polyomavirus and chlamydia tests, but vets have questioned the need for them, so a recent check-up is what we ask for now. If a bird is not domestic, or has been exposed to pathogens or to a high-risk environment, we may still ask for additional testing. We also check every bird over ourselves on arrival. If a bird has not had a recent vet visit we can still board it — we just limit its interaction with the other birds.

How often should my bird's nails be trimmed?

There is no schedule — trim them when they start catching. If your bird's nails snag on fabric or on your hand, or the tips have gone needle-sharp, it is time. Some birds need it every couple of months and some go a year.
