Which parrots are the biggest guests in our house? Meet the macaw.
Macaws are the biggest parrots we look after. Like cockatoos, they need daily interaction and significant care, so a macaw is never left on its own for long.
A macaw is one of our extra large birds. And in macaws, males and females look alike, so you can't tell them apart just by looking.
Most macaw species are CITES listed, so taking one across an international border needs permits. Check before you travel.
When a macaw boards with us, please contact us first, before you book, so we can plan the stay together. And we don't groom macaws.
You get daily photo and video updates in the BST Mobile App, so you always know how your macaw is doing.
Going away? Contact us first about your macaw, then book a stay at birdsittingtoronto.ca.
In Our Own Words
What Macaws Are Like
“Finches and canaries are low maintenance, while larger parrots like cockatoos and macaws need daily interaction and significant care.”
From our blog: Different Types of Pet Birds“Most macaw species are CITES-listed and need permits to cross an international border.”
From our blog: Does Your Parrot Need a CITES Permit?“Species where the sexes look alike are called monomorphic, and they include some of the most popular pet birds in Canada — lovebirds, African greys, most conures, caiques and macaws among them.”

Questions About Boarding Macaws
Can I book my macaw's stay straight away?
For large macaws, please contact us first. Macaws board with us as extra-large birds, and we would rather talk your bird's stay through with you before the dates are set.
Can you groom my macaw while it is with you?
No. XL grooming prices apply to large birds such as African greys. We do not groom macaws or cockatoos.
Is my macaw out of its cage while it boards?
Out of the cage between 9am and 7pm — about 4–6 hours a day, depending on how your bird gets on with the others.
What does my macaw need from a vet before it comes to us?
A recent vet visit with a clean bill of health. We used to require negative polyomavirus and chlamydia tests, but vets have questioned the need for them, so a recent check-up is what we ask for now. If a bird is not domestic, or has been exposed to pathogens or to a high-risk environment, we may still ask for additional testing. We also check every bird over ourselves on arrival. If a bird has not had a recent vet visit we can still board it — we just limit its interaction with the other birds.
How often should my bird's nails be trimmed?
There is no schedule — trim them when they start catching. If your bird's nails snag on fabric or on your hand, or the tips have gone needle-sharp, it is time. Some birds need it every couple of months and some go a year.

Food is changed every day, and the fresh fruit and veg you send are given daily. If you would rather not send food, our seed and pellet mix is $2 per day.
Fresh water, all day
Fresh filtered water, kept fresh all day — every bird here thinks pellet soup is a delicacy.
A clean cage
Fresh tray liners and a tidy cage, so your bird’s home away from home stays clean and comfortable.
Fresh chop
Fresh daily chop is an optional extra for boarding guests — add it when you book and it is served every day of the stay.
Grooming during the stay
Ask for a nail, wing or beak trim on the booking form and it is done during the stay, so nobody makes a separate trip.
