“Did you know the canary isn't a parrot at all?”

Read The Transcript

Did you know the canary isn't a parrot at all? It's a finch, and one of the sweetest singers around.

Canaries come from the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa. Most are five or six inches long, and with good care, many live ten years or more.

People have bred them for centuries: song canaries for voice, type canaries for shape, and colour canaries for feathers, like these two.

Mostly the males sing, sweet and gentle, and quiet enough for most apartments. Canaries don't talk, and most would rather be admired than handled.

Day to day, feed pellets or a good seed mix, fresh greens like broccoli and kale, and clean water. They're flyers, not climbers, so a long cage beats a tall one.

One common mistake? Fumes. Canaries are so sensitive that coal miners once used them to warn of bad air. Keep air fresheners and cleaning sprays away, and never overheat a non-stick pan.

Canaries board with us as small birds, out of the cage between 9 AM and 7 PM, about four to six hours a day, depending on how they get on with the others, always supervised.

Fresh food daily. Canaries love a splash, so their water bowl doubles as a bathtub, and we keep it fresh. Plus daily photos and videos in the BST Mobile App.

Our care, card by card

Tap or hover a card to see what it means in practice.

  • Daily free-flight time

Out of the cage between 9am and 7pm — about 4–6 hours a day, depending on how your bird gets on with the others.

  • Play & one-on-one time

Supervised time in an enriched room with a playstand and play fountain. Cages sit inside the flock, never off on their own.

  • Daily photos & videos

Photos and video of your own bird every day in the BST Mobile App, with an email too. If anything changes you hear from us straight away, not at pick-up.

  • Fresh food daily

Food is changed every day, and the fresh fruit and veg you send are given daily. If you would rather not send food, our seed and pellet mix is $2 per day.

  • Fresh water, all day

Fresh filtered water, kept fresh all day — every bird here thinks pellet soup is a delicacy.

  • A clean cage

Fresh tray liners and a tidy cage, so your bird’s home away from home stays clean and comfortable.

  • Fresh chop

Fresh daily chop is an optional extra for boarding guests — add it when you book and it is served every day of the stay.

  • Grooming during the stay

Ask for a nail, wing or beak trim on the booking form and it is done during the stay, so nobody makes a separate trip.

  • Watched Around the Clock

Cameras on the birds even when we are not in the room. Temperature and humidity monitored; air HEPA-filtered.
