Read The Transcript

Which parrot builds its own house out of sticks, then tells you all about it? Meet the quaker parrot.

Quakers, also called monk parakeets, come from South America. They're about 11 inches long, usually bright green with a soft grey face and chest.

Most parrots nest in tree hollows. Quakers build their own, out of sticks. In the wild, pairs often share one huge nest, each with its own room.

They're bold, busy and devoted to their people. Many are great talkers, and with good care they can live 20 to 30 years.

A quaker needs a roomy cage, things to shred and weave, and pellets with fresh vegetables. Seeds are a treat, since quakers gain weight easily.

A common mistake is taking a cage-door nip personally. Quakers guard their cage like a nest, so don't reach in. Let yours come out, then make friends on neutral ground.

Quakers are regulars here, and board as medium birds. Yours gets safe weaving material, a cage it can't rearrange into an escape, and we clean without reaching past a quaker guarding its door.

It's out of the cage between 9 AM and 7 PM, about 4 to 6 hours a day, depending on how it gets on with the others. Fresh food every day, water kept fresh, and yes, quakers love making pellet soup. Plus daily photo and video updates in the BST Mobile App.

A busy quaker is a happy quaker. Book a stay at birdsittingtoronto.ca.

Boarding a Quaker parrot

Quakers arrive opinionated and usually leave having bossed somebody around. They need something to weave and shred or they redecorate the cage, so a boarding quaker gets weaving-safe material and a cage it cannot rearrange into an escape.

Quakers are regulars here, and there is usually at least one other Quaker parrot staying with us, so yours is rarely the only one of its kind.

Quaker parrot owners ask us

How much is Quaker parrot boarding?

$19.75 per bird per day. Quakers sit in our medium birds band (most conures, cockatiels, quakers). Longer stays are charged at a lower rate per day — the discount is already factored into your quote, so there is nothing to ask for.

My quaker is territorial about its cage. Is that a problem?

No. Cage cleaning is done in a way that does not require reaching past a bird that objects to it, and a quaker that guards its door is handled on its own terms rather than argued with.

Can a quaker board with a bird it does not know?

Not in the same cage. Birds only share a cage if they already live together at home.

Have you looked after many quakers?

Yes. Quakers are regulars here, and there is usually at least one other Quaker parrot staying with us, so yours is rarely the only one of its kind.
