Which African grey is smaller and darker, with a horn coloured beak? Meet the Timneh grey.

The Timneh is the smaller, darker grey, with a horn coloured beak.

It boards with us as an extra large bird. Timneh greys were long treated as a subspecies of the Congo grey.

Since January twenty seventeen, African grey and Timneh parrots have been in CITES Appendix one, so crossing a border needs both an export permit and an import permit.

Like the Congo, a Timneh does best on a calm, predictable day: the same person, doing the same things, at the same times.

You get daily photo and video updates in the BST Mobile App, so you always know how your Timneh is doing.

Calm, predictable, and well looked after. Book a stay at birdsittingtoronto.ca.

Questions About Boarding Timneh African Greys

How is a Timneh's day run at your house?

Calmly and predictably: the same person doing the same things at the same times, which is what a grey does best on, Congo or Timneh.

Is my Timneh grey out of its cage while it boards?

Out of the cage between 9am and 7pm — about 4–6 hours a day, depending on how your bird gets on with the others.

What does my Timneh grey need from a vet before it comes to us?

A recent vet visit with a clean bill of health. We used to require negative polyomavirus and chlamydia tests, but vets have questioned the need for them, so a recent check-up is what we ask for now. If a bird is not domestic, or has been exposed to pathogens or to a high-risk environment, we may still ask for additional testing. We also check every bird over ourselves on arrival. If a bird has not had a recent vet visit we can still board it — we just limit its interaction with the other birds.

How often should my bird's nails be trimmed?

There is no schedule — trim them when they start catching. If your bird's nails snag on fabric or on your hand, or the tips have gone needle-sharp, it is time. Some birds need it every couple of months and some go a year.
